Chaotic planning impacts Shenton Park members

Thursday 13 Feb 2014

The closure of the Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital has created fears for the future of our members at the facility.  Unfortunately their fears have been compounded by frustration with the Department over some apparently chaotic planning.

The HSUWA attended a meeting at Shenton Park, arranged by one of our members, with staff from the Health Department's Transition Unit.

We were alarmed to hear that some staff had accepted new roles at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), but those offers had been subsequently revoked.  This caused frustration and a sense that 'the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing'.

Due to rumoured cut-backs at SCGH, new staff cannot be hired at this time - apparently no one told the heads of the Department, who were proceeding with normal recruitment processes.

The meeting also covered some concerns about the fairness of the processes being followed for appointment to jobs at the Wellington Street campus and some issues to do with variation to existing contracts of employment.

The HSUWA is pursuing these matters with the Department of Health and will provide specific advice about the outcomes to those currently working at Shenton Park.
