Disability: HSU Advocates for National Leadership on the NDIS Workforce

Friday 11 Sep 2020

This week National Secretary Lloyd Williams appeared on behalf of the HSU before the Commonwealth Parliament’s NDIS Joint Standing Committee as part of their inquiry into the NDIS workforce alongside Victorian HSU member and Disability Support Worker, Simone.

This follows a submission the HSU made to the Committee earlier in the year, alongside research that the union commissioned from UNSW. At the hearing, the HSU gave evidence on how the NDIS is leading to the erosion of quality jobs and risks undermining the ambitions of the scheme. HSU member, Simone, gave first-hand account of the struggles she faced at work during Victoria’s second wave of COVID-19, describing how she and her colleagues were not provided with proper PPE and were being asked to use their own annual leave when required to self-isolate. Previous inquiries by this Committee have led to some recommendations being adopted by both State and Commonwealth governments – so we will keep members updated as developments arise.
