Fair Work Commission Stalls on Paid Pandemic Leave

Friday 24 Jul 2020

On 8 July 2020, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) handed down its decision on our application for an award entitlement for paid pandemic leave for health, aged care, and social and community service employees.

While acknowledging the merits of our claim, the FWC have decided not to grant it at this stage, and have ‘adjourned’ the matter, leaving the door open to bring the matter back on if the Covid-19 situation ‘deteriorates’.

This ‘wait and see’ approach is disappointing. Particularly as the number of cases in Victoria soars and we are seeing clusters emerge in health and aged care, highlighting the need and relevance of our claim.

The HSU is considering its next steps. In the meantime, the National Office is asking for reports of self-isolation or quarantine without pay, lack of PPE and infection control in workplaces, and anything our members believe relevant to this campaign. Please call the WA office on 9328 5155 and ask to speak to an Industrial Officer.
