How does FSH's mandatory uniform policy impact you?

Friday 26 Jun 2015

Fiona Stanley Hospital is the only public hospital in WA with a mandatory uniform policy and this has affected some groups differently.

Clinical Psychologists & Clinical Neuropsychologists

FSH is the only hospital - public or private - we've identified that requires clinical psychologists and clinical neuropsychologists to wear a uniform.

There are many reasons psychologists do not wear a uniform, including their requirement to build trust and create environments in which patients will disclose sensitive information. These groups have signed a consensus position statement which holds that wearing a uniform should be at their discretion. Management has also been presented with a log of issues caused by the uniform.

The HSUWA has been working with these groups to negotiate an exemption to the policy and some limited exemptions have been granted to those working in the mental health wards, but that has been unsuccessful, so we've been left with no choice but to escalate matters to a dispute. Both the union and the hospital are awaiting further advice from the professional body and we hope to achieve a resolution soon.

Social Workers

Many social workers have also reached out to the HSUWA to talk about issues with their uniforms. They face some similar challenges to those detailed by the psychologists. We were alarmed to hear stories of verbal abuse and threats to these staff members, when patients and patient families see someone with 'social work' emblazoned on their shirt. The HSUWA will soon hold a meeting at FSH for all social workers to discuss this matter and concerns about staffing. Look out for a meeting invitation soon.

Clerical & Administrative Staff

Many clerical and administrative staff at FSH have received corporate uniform shirts. They are reportedly more comfortable and professional looking than the polo shirts even though the colour scheme is grey on grey.

As always, if you have questions or concerns please email the union@hsuwa.com.au or call.
