HSUWA Members at HSS are campaigning for secure funding streams that would allow for permanent employment.
Background
Short-term contracts lead to long-term pain. HSUWA advocates for job security within HSS.
For many years, HSUWA Members have pushed for job security across public health, including Health Support Services (HSS).
In the last three rounds of bargaining, your union has made improvements to job security provisions, including the Job Security Review (JSR) process by tightening review criteria, shortening timeframes and enhancing reporting mechanisms. Thanks to union advocacy, improving job security is now a key focus of the Ministerial Advisory Panel, where the Health Minister directs key priorities.
HSUWA Delegates have advocated directly with HSS Human Resources for better recruitment and job security measures, including HSUWA Service Operations Department Members signing a petition to the Treasurer.
The issue of short-term project funding versus ongoing demand roles is a barrier to HSS employing staff on a permanent basis. We know that the short-sighted funding model leads to staff retention issues and inflates the costs of recruiting and training new staff, putting the workforce under serious pressure. A clear fix for this type of restrictive funding lies with Treasury.

HSUWA Members Campaign for Change
While the damaging side effects of job insecurity are known, it will take strength and advocacy from workers like you, who bear the brunt of insecure work, to win change. It’s going to take HSS workers committing to joining the union and campaigning together to win secure funding streams that allow for permanent employment.
We know that existing HSUWA Members are prepared to campaign for change. Members have a strategy to take the fight for secure employment to the Treasurer. For it to be successful, workers at HSS need to join us to build your power.
