We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and farewell to HSUWA’s outgoing President, Cheryl Hamill.

Cheryl has played a longstanding and prominent role in our union. Cheryl joined HSUWA as a member in 1985. She has been a Committee of Management member for 24 years and President for nearly 20 years. She has been a Councillor of the National HSU since 2002 and has been awarded life membership of the national union in recognition.

Throughout her time as President, Cheryl has been a guiding light for Members and union staff. She has overseen a period of change and challenge with wisdom and provided incredibly thoughtful yet relentless leadership. She led change when needed and was visionary and brave in her plan for what your union could and should be. Her warm personality, intellectual rigour, and ability to analyse a wide range of information have always shone through.

Cheryl is a highly accomplished Health Professional, having run the Library and Information Services across South and East Metro Health Services for many years. In 2020, she was awarded the HCL Anderson Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the library and information profession in Australia. This is the ALIA’s (the Australian Library and Information Association) highest honour.

HSUWA would not be where it is today without her steady encouragement and highly competent guidance and leadership over many years. We thank Cheryl for her enormous and positive contribution to our union and wish her a very happy retirement!
