Health workers take on all sorts of challenges but no one in the BHS Geriatric Rehab Team thought they’d be challenged to remake a pair of pants to add Velcro sides! The multi-disciplinary Bentley Health Service Geriatric Rehabilitation Team say that their patient-centred approach means they are prepared to take on any challenge, even if it involves sewing.

The Ward has 30 beds for Geriatric patients who are post-surgical and generally need help to get mobile so they can be safely discharged. The Ward is fairly new, and the team say that gave them the opportunity to set goals and be innovative.

The team works collaboratively and is trialling the use of a range of apps and tools. The team also runs group programs for the patients including a Breakfast Group and is working on a new garden area and a program that is at the heart of their work ‘Get Up, Get Dressed, Get Moving.’

The team say their effectiveness is boosted by their ability to make meaningful connections with patients and their families. That sewing project is part of the connection, giving the patient the ability and independence to safely get dressed and undressed, with a little innovative thinking and some Velcro!
